| Cloudcroft is exactly that, a village on a 9,000 foot mountain, where beautiful clouds "croft" and pour out rain for a few minutes every day in the summer and bring snow in the winter. Not far from the National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, Cloudcroft is a lush area with a small village and the wonderful Cloudcroft Lodge from which dining room you can see a strip of White Sands National Monument in the Tularosa Basin below. The Lodge also sports a 9 hole golf course, 2nd highest in the world. Not far away are the Mayfield flower nurseries. These mountains are where Smokey the Bear was rescued from a fire and thus began a legend we all know.
Ruidoso is famous for its Ruidoso Downs quarter horse racing and its Billy the Kid Casino. Just a few miles West of Ruidoso is the Mescalero Apache Reservation famous for Geronimo and Cochise. They have several large commercial endeavors including Casino Apache and the Inn of the Mountain Gods. A favorite among New Mexicans, Ruidoso is the site of many retirement homes. |
