Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos Restaurants
One of the most interesting and delightful things about New Mexico is its distinctive food. This cuisine is very specific, combining both Mexican and Native American features. New Mexican food is different from Mexican food as you will discover when you come here and eat at any of the many fine New Mexican restaurants available. Just good old steak and potatoes and other "American" fare is also plentifully available. The fairly new "restaurant row" on Coors in West Albuquerque on the border between Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Paradise Hills, and Corrales sports many, large and capable restaurants, among them Gardunos (New Mexican), Chili's (contemporary Mex/American food), TGI Fridays (lots of BBQ and other stuff with a flare), and many others. Nearby are also Chinese restaurants, buffets, and fast food. Throughout Albuquerque you will find Italian, Texan, Indian, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and many, many New Mexican restaurants. Santa Fe is probably best known for its trendy Pink Adobe (gourmet food) and the La Fonda Hotel (New Mexican).
The burrito is probably the most eaten food in New Mexico and features refried beans and a lot of variations in meats. The official State Question is "Red or Green?" meaning red or green chili? The famous Hatch green chili grows here and lots of red ones too. Many houses sport "ristras" (see photo above) which are strings of bright red chilies made at harvest which dry over time. They make a great momento of a trip to NM.
If you go to the "Rez" be sure to get a Navajo Taco on their famous fry bread. Oh, and, Texans come regularly to Red River to get a really good, big steak at at Texas Red's or Timber's Steakhouses. In Taos you could first get a really, really potent Margarita at the Taos Inn Bar and then eat at Doc Martin's Restaurant housed in the Inn. Be sure to try their crushed pinon nuts covered chile rellanos. Northern NM food is slightly different, eptiomized by the very present "Frito pie" - taco ingredients on top of Fritos and chile. It is absolutely delicious.
