Founded in 1598, Espanola was the first capitol of New Mexico. In the Arriba (upper) Rio Grande region it is located between the Jemez Mountains and Truchas Peaks. You go through it to get to Taos and the Tourquoise Circle area from Santa Fe. Along the way there are numerous casinos on pueblo lands. It is just West of Chimayo which is known as the Lourdes of America because of miracuous healings that occur on the site where the current mission stands that was built in 1816. Every year thousands of New Mexicans make the long walk to Chimayo in penance during Easter week to seek out the healing dirt in Chimayo.
