Another Brief History of NM

Sandia Man, his bones discovered in the mountains near Albuquerque by graduate students under the guidance of anthropologist Dr. Frank Hibben of UNM decades ago, purportedly roamed this land 27,000 years ago hunting saber- toothed tigers and mammoths. Fossil and pictograph sites abound in the Land of Enchantment - an old land with very old cultures in evidence from pueblo ruins in Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde to the ancient holy mountains that surround the Navajo Nation.

Also in this very old land is one of the largest volcano calderas in the world: Valle Grande near Bandelier and Jemez Springs. Other mountains, especially in the Northern part of the state are said to have been flung from this volcano to their current resting places. The Native American culture dates from the fabled Anasasi to the current residents of the many pueblos still functioning in New Mexico. The old Taos Pueblo structure is still inhabited, it's image known throughout the world. Of Apache, Navajo, and Pueblo Indian fame, this state sports many Old West stories about the conflicts between the Natives here, the Spanish Conquistadores that came up from Mexico, and the "Blue Coats" of the US government forces.

Notable NM historic characters and events include: Geronimo, Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett, don Juan de Onate, Cabeza de Vaca of the "7 Cities of Cibola" fame, Navajo Code Talkers (WWII), Pancho Villa (attacked a NM area town during his forays), the 5-year "Long Walk" of Navajos and Apaches who were later returned to their homelands, Thomas Edison shot 1st movie in 1898 in NM ("Indian Day School"), Buddy Holly recorded "Peggy Sue" in Clovis NM, in 1947 Roswell had its UFO incident, in 1945 the first atom bomb was detonated at Trinity Site near Alamogordo NM, in about 1953 monkeys were rocketed into orbit and in 1982 the shuttle Columbia landed at HAFB near White Sands, and much, much more.
