Officially incorporated in 1909 after the county's creation in 1903, Portales was best known for Eastern New Mexico University and growing peanuts and sweet potatoes. Today the entire county is best recognized for its production of dairy products, although it still is one of the largest producers of Valencia peanuts in the nation.
