New Mexico has the usual difficulties, especially in Albuquerque, with crime. The Albuquerque Police have a domestic violence response team, and some areas have mental health training response teams. People, as they do everywhere, should watch their children and their possessions while traveling in NM. The usual safety precautions prevail: locking parked cars, parking them in lighted areas, teaching children not to talk to strangers and to know their address/phone number, using caution when in the presence of a illegal or violent situation, contacting the authorities to deal with these situations rather than attempting to become involved.
NM is one of the few states where a person can carry a weapon so long as it is in sight. Many men carry knives on their belts and guns in their cars. With a long gunfighter history the residents of NM are not afraid of guns nor do they misuse them much. They hunt and provide protection by the use of fire arms. The NM State Police is very active in cross-jurisdiction crimes and are known as the "Black Angels" because of their black uniform. There are lots of regions in NM that are served by County Sheriff offices which coordinate when necessary with other law enforcement agencies. The FBI handles homicides on the reservations and other crimes there although the reservations have their own police forces and also have "rangers" who travel the vast spaces on reservations when there is trouble.
