The Hispanic and Native American ethos of respecting and caring for their elders is very evident in New Mexico. Sometimes it is hard to get a family to accept some help that is available for their elder simply because the duty to provide his or her care fully is so deeply ingrained. Most communities have a Senior Center and provide a Meals on Wheels program. There is a sizable Senior community in New Mexico simply because many, many people who are born here never leave and they, as Seniors, tend to stay in their home communites and, indeed, in their family homes until death. This state also has seen the immigration of many retired Seniors because of its beauty and cost of living. Seniors are a respected and revered population in New Mexico life. |
