Taos County (N Central) map of counties Taos Pueblo, Taos Ski Valley, Questa, Red River
|
| Taos is an artist center and the small town has over 100 galleries. In addition to the arts of all type, Taos Ski valley is known worldwide for its Alpine skiing. As if that weren't enough, the Taos Pueblo is the oldest inhabited village in the USA and is a world historical landmark. There are seven museums in Taos featuring Kit Carson memorabilia, Anasasi pots, famous paintings, and more. For such a tiny town it is full of events and cultural activity. All around Taos are small towns, most with artist activities or skiing capacity. Red River and Sipapu are great for skiing as is Angel Fire. Questa is an old town with a large mine and that entire region is under investigation by the a US Environmental Protective Agency right now with hundreds of water, soil, and fish sensors placed in the area. A lovely little village, Questa is more and more concerned about its drinking water and a pile of rock gravel that threatens to come down and cut off Questa from Red River and maybe even Taos. Tiny El Rito is a little further North and lies across the highway from Sunshine Valley. There are other towns: Pilar, Embudo, Mora, Tres Piedras, and so on. You would have to see them all to understand this very quaint North Central spot of New Mexico.
