Two Interstate Highways (25 and 40) crisscross New Mexico at Albuquerque which is slightly North and West of the center of the state. This convergence is known locally as "The Big I" which has just undergone a major expansion and renovation. The state highways are kept in good condition. When you get to remote areas there are well kept, hard packed dirt roads, and even more remote scenic areas get you into 4 wheel drive areas. Many New Mexicans have 4 wheel drive vehicles because they might often transverse dirt roads and roads that are snow packed. But the larger cities have good maintenance and snow plows stationed in them for their roads. There are a lot of well-traveled "Trails" like the Santa Fe Trail, the Turquoise Trail, and the Enchanted Circle.
